Introduction

This research guide has been designed to help law students with topics related to sports law study, research, and practice.  Because of the diversity of sports law, student may need to research several different areas of the law.  This guide will assist students with finding information about the major areas of practice in sports law, including the following:

Associations

  • Sports Lawyers Association
    The Sports Lawyers Association (SLA) is a non-profit, international, professional organization whose common goal is the understanding, advancement and ethical practice of sports law. There are over 1,000 current members: practicing lawyers, law educators, law students, and other professionals with an interest in law relating to professional and amateur sports.
  • ABA Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Law Industries
    The mission is to educate lawyers in the legal principles and transactional aspects of entertainment and sports law; to provide a platform for the discussion of issues affecting these fields, and to foster excellence in the practice of law in these fields.
  • TRAC - The Racing Attorney Conference
    The Racing Attorney Conference, first held in 2008, is an annual event that combines education, development and networking with leaders in the motorsports industry. TRAC is planned and presented by the Indianapolis Bar Association Sports and Entertainment Law Section and the North Carolina Bar Association.
  • SRLA - Sports and Recreation Law Association
    The Sport and Recreation Law Association is a nonprofit corporation. Their purpose is to further the study and dissemination of information regarding legal aspects of sport and recreation. The Association addresses legal aspects of sport and recreation within both the public and private sectors.

  • National Sports Law Institute - Marquette Law
    The National Sports Law Institute (NSLI) strives to be the leading national educational and research institute for the study of legal, ethical, and business issues affecting amateur and professional sports from both an academic and practical perspective. It provides educational opportunities for law students as well as current and future leaders in the sports industry.
  • Penn State Institute for Sports Law, Policy and Research
    The Penn State Institute for Sports Law, Policy, and Research is a resource for sports journalists, scholars of sports law, and industry participants. The Institute is designed to: (1) serve as resource for journalists, lawyers and others concerned about sports and public policy; (2) promote dialogue between students of sport and major industry participants; (3) aid scholars in policy-oriented research and facilitate the dissemination of this research to policy makers and industry participants.
  • Legal Information Institute - Sports Law
    The WEX Sports Law webpage, hosted at Cornell Law Schools Legal Information Institute, is designed as a public-access legal dictionary and encyclopedia and it includes links to some primary law.
  • Rodney Fort's Sports Economics
    Data section includes links to statistics concerning Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Football League and National Hockey League.
